USDA Rural Development promoted its ability to build a community from the ground up during a two-day display at the 2008 Iowa State Fair. The display included a 20-foot long and eight-foot tall "main street" with such buildings as a grocery store, fire station, bank, house, a Rural Development office, along with a water tower donated by the Iowa Rural Water Association.
With its many kids activities, the display was a popular place for children to visit.
In past year, Rural Development's investment in Iowa helped create or retain nearly 2,300 jobs, aided 1,240 families in buying their own home and assisted more than 100 communities in improving community facilities and upgrading local infrastructure.
